Dan Solem

Inaugural Class of 2009
I am an Iowa native and was born and raised in Decorah, Iowa where I enjoyed playing an array of different sports and spending time outdoors.
After graduating from high school in 1999 I moved to Ames, Iowa where I attended Iowa State University from 1999 through 2004. While in college I participated in the Association of General Contractors Student Chapter, helped out with Habitat for Humanity house building projects, and embarked on three separate internships to help develop my experiences in the construction industry. During my internships I had the opportunity to assist in building a residential development project in Rochester, Minnesota, the Blood Center of Central Iowa in Des Moines, Iowa, Central College’s Vermeer Science Center in Pella, Iowa, and Buena Vista University’s Estelle Siebens Science Center in Storm Lake, Iowa. In 2004 I graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Construction Engineering.
I moved to the Des Moines Metro Area in August of 2004 and began my professional career as a Project Engineer for The Weitz Company by assisting in the completion of the Pella Data Center Project for Pella Corporation in Pella, Iowa. Following that project’s completion I transitioned to the Valley High School Improvements Projects which consisted of multi-phased renovations, demolitions, and additions to an existing structure. This project finished ahead of schedule and was officially turned over to the West Des Moines Community School in the Fall of 2007. Currently I am residing as an Assistant Project Manager on the Iowa Health – Des Moines West Hospital Project located off 60th Street in West Des Moines, Iowa. This is a unique project in the sense that our Project Team has implemented both LEAN Construction and Virtual Construction Techniques giving me opportunity to lead our Virtual Construction initiative.
